Through the Mental Health Zine Library, our collection of community and partnership Zines, and our own Strange Things? Zine, we aim to amplify the voices of young people.

What is the Mental Health Zine Library?

The Mental Health Zine Library is a collection of self-published DIY on all things mental health, and everything that covers. We are a small pop up archive, aiming to showcase a range of personal experiences and share them with our community in and around Tyne & Wear.

We’ve been making zines with young people through strange things? Collective since 2017, and recognise what a cathartic and healing process it is to put pen to paper and make something.

But hearing each others stories is just as important as writing our own, and though making zines or being creative isn’t for everyone, we think anybody can benefit from them. We started the Mental Health Zine Library because we want to collect, highlight and share these personal stories by taking them into the community and making them accessible to those who need to hear them the most, whether it’s perzines about loss, mad pride, poetry collections on anxiety and everything in between.

Both the MHZL and strange things? Collective proudly form part of the Young People’s Project at Washington Mind, where we work with young people in and around Sunderland to ensure our work is always co produced and working to serve our community.

The MHZL also wouldn’t be here if not for our supporters on Kickstarter. Our original fundraiser was successfully completed in October 2020.

Submitting to our Strange Things? Zine

To help amplify the voices of young people, we have produced a few of our own Zines here at Washington Mind Young People’s Project under the title of ‘Strange Things?’ Zine. Work has been focused around; Closure, Loneliness and Progress, which contain a collective of submissions from our community, sent in; via post, through email or at one of our workshops.

We’re currently looking for 11-25 year olds to explore the impact of religious belief and/or spirituality on your wellbeing. We’d love to hear responses from young people of all faiths, and those of none, from photography to poetry, testimonies and self-reflection, non-fiction, artwork or anything else.

To help you brainstorm, here are a few points to explore:

  • Prayer/meditation
  • Life after death
  • Suffering and hardship
  • Identity
  • Religious communities

But please don’t let this restrain you, feel free to write on any relevant topics! Please send your submissions to: ypp@washingtonmind.org.uk before 12th September 2023.

Projects and Partnership

We often work in partnerships with schools and community organisations to deliver workshops around making zines and the benefits of them, or to make tailored zines around a specific topic. This has included our We are the Coalfields’ Zine which we developed in partnership with the Coalfields Area Committee and the ‘Linking Lonely Minds’ Zine which we developed in partnership with South Tyneside Council.

Young people are at the centre of all of our zines. If you are a professional who would like us to work with your organisation and the young people you support, please email us on: ypp@washingtonmind.org.uk to discuss the possibility of a partnership Zine.

A Guide for Making Your Own Zine - Home
